Post What GPS to Get

My wife and I are shopping for a GPS and a very important feature for us is to be able to input multiple destinations. We do not want to use a PDA or a notebook computer. We also require the voice directions. You know, "Turn left 500 feet on Elm Drive." The screen size is not as important since we want one that verbally gives directions. I drive bad enough without trying to read some 3.5" screen while driving.

Does anyone have any recommendation regarding a GPS? We are looking at one of the Garmin Street Pilots, and considered the Garmin Nuvi 66, but it does a bunch of other NON GPS stuff that I don't really want to pay for. I have a radio that plays MP# I don't need a GPS to do that also. So, how about it?

In case anyone was wondering, we chose the Garmin 2700. We like it well enough. Of course, just like any large database of information, it occasionally doesn't not have accurate information stored in it. For the most part it does.

One of the things that I like, is we can set the type of vehicle so that it will avoid areas that we would not want to drive while pulling a travel trailer, and we can change it to "car/motorcycle" when we want to navigate locally without the trailer. One of the things it will do when it is set to "truck" is take us around the block when we miss a turn instead of have us make a U turn.

There is one thing about it though. I swear I hear a bit of annoyance in her voice when she says "Recalculating" after we miss a turn. (That's how my wife and I refer to her, since I have the default female voice selected. She has an Ipaq with a male voice and we, of course, always refer to him as he. Funny how we just kinda fell into that.)

The Ipaq uses the TomTom gps database while the Garmin..well...it uses the Garmin... database. The TomTom doesn't name the street we are instructed to trun onto while the Garmin will say "Turn left on Elm Street" just like we want. Both have voice instruction which is good for driving in heavy traffic. It is sometime hard to see the street sign especially when a municipality found it necessary to expand the simple two lane intersection into a huge divided five lane intersection and figure we should still be able to read that tiny street sign across the road from the left lane while looking for our next left run. That is one thin that much of Florida has going for it. They use huge signs, sometimes lighted, hangin right over the street. Of course they don't have them everywhere.

Wow, I haven't been here for awhile. I can't believe no one would help you out with this. I thought everybody was using GPS now. No offense. Well, I guess you were the last one to start. Maybe NOW everyone is using GPS.

I use a Magellan. It is one of those stuck to my windshield. It seems to work pretty good. It has a pretty good size screen and doesn't get me lost very often, but sometime.....

I can't say that "she" ever sounds annoyed though. It sounds like you have to work on your relationship with "her".

Well, I don't know where she gets off acting so annoyed. It is like she always gives accurate directions.

It has been almost two years. Do you still like that GPS? I am thinking about getting another one.
